Character Design

Week 2 of character design. Took me a little longer to warm up this time, but i was able to pull out some good drawings. You may notice that some of the drawings are similar to Disney's Mulan. Our assignment was to try and draw Mulan, on model. i had some level of success. I see some resemblance but with my own style.

I apologize for the images quality, they were to big to scan, and i was to lazy to edit together, so i just took photos of them from my phone...

Week two of fantastic figure. Female model.

not as successful as last week.

My homework on the other hand, i feel, turned out nicely. the assignment was to take a drawing from class and make him mummy-tastis. all the poses i drew were pretty much the opposite of what a real mummy would do, or act like. But i like my results, i went for something funny, and i managed to get a few laughs out of the class, so that's a success in my book.

Character Design

Today was Character Design. I think it’s going to work out pretty well. The class it self is VERY similar to Fantastic Figure, the main difference is that we’ll be creating model sheets, and Fantastic Figure is more about the finished illustration.

but day it’s day on of this class and i already pounded through a 50 page sketch book. This makes me happy because this class forces me to draw A LOT, which is something that usually makes me very lazy.

Below is just a few of the drawings from today. all 1 and 2 minuet sketches.

School has return after a short two week break between summer and fall sessions.

I’m hoping that this semester will be “portfolio building” one. And as I do every semester (it’s become tradition) I’m going to promise to update my blog more often, and then probably get utterly slammed with homework and work work, and not update it again until possibly a week after fall semester lets out… But a boy can dream.

Today’s class was Drawing the Fantastic Figure. We’re on the Cintiq in that class, and today I realized that I would die a happy man if it were at the hands of a Cintiq. I’ve never used one before but it was surprisingly natural feeling and easy to use. We draw from a live model, and that’s that. Just do work.

Bellow is what I did in class today, just a few 5’s and 10’s. But the homework is to take one of those poses and fantastic-asize it into a mummy. Pretty cool assignment

I also lost a lot of faith in my school lately. It seems like every year the communication between departments and administration gets worse and worse, so the organization of just about everything goes down with it. You would think that with the amount of money that I pay (the government pays) that the school would have their shit together. For example, over the past two weeks I’ve received 3 phone calls, and 4 emails about class schedule changes, I even got a call in the morning about one class changing, then not even 12 hours later I get an email about the same class changing times again…!?!...ALL messages from different people, none of which are the instructor OR my advisor. And today’s class was one big cluster F too. But I’ll quit the ranting for now. Character Design tomorrow… prepare for disaster.

2010 spring

I find that in the last few hours of any project I work on, all I can think about it is how much I’d like to start over. I try to see this as a positive thing, and a measurement of how much I’ve learned from any given piece. And so, this spring semester, I’ve learned a LOT!

On average, I’m producing about 3 paintings a week. It’s usually two land scapes and one figure (I’m also taking an illustration class right now, but I’ll get to that later). Painting has been treating me pretty well, after the first half of the semester I felt like I finally KNEW how to paint. And seeing wonderful works of art (that have always inspired me to begin with) in person, during the trip me and Sydney took to Spain only inspired me more. I’m excited to continue developing it.

Side note: I sent in an application for this landscape competition in Alameda, and I’ll know if I’m in or not within the next two weeks.

Here’s a few of my most recent paintings…

all the land scapes (mountains oil on panel 12x16, bay bridge oil on panel 10x10, tree on a hill side oil on panel 11x14) i painted in about an hour. the male figure (oil on panel 12x16) was a two week pose. the female figure is week one of a three week pose (oil on canvas 20x24)

painting continues. and my love grows.

so i have this fantasy that one day i'll be a painter. a professional one. a masterful one. and i'll travel and paint, and i'll just call it life. this is what art does to me, and it's how i know i've chosen the right path. and so that's enough emotion for now.

here's what i've been working on.

this week was glass. i think i pulled it off. there's some things to work out, such as ellipses, and some crisper lines. in time. i tried to stay loose with this one anyway. (no really, it's not an excuse)

and here's the homework that i've been working. we just had to create some kind of interesting still life and work on it for a couple of weeks. it's coming together.

i love progress photos. also. taking photos on my phone helps me check things like balance, value and contrast. which show up very well on a little photo.

and then there's heads and hands class... it's alright.

Oil and Water

so it's week three of school and i already feel like time is running out. There's a lot to be done in a short amount of time. But I'll manage, as i usually seem to do. But even at this point in the semester i feel like I've got a lot to show for, and i always feel good about my self when i can see progress in my work and i really think I've made a big jump this semester. There's plenty of room to grow but I've got a solid start.

so my oil painting virginity has been lost. and it's been amazing.

i have a still life painting class at the academy, and i've never painted with oils before but i've always wanted to. as much as i love animation and film, i know im a fine artist at heart. and i always love my studio classes.

painting with oils is like no other medium i used before. painting wet on wet defently takes some getting used to. but once you get a basic understanding of how the paint works and how to apply it, the painting pretty much paints it self.

but more painting to come, and other class work! I'll post some videos later today.

another semester

so i officially started school yesterday. it's going to be a very time intensive semester i predict. but i'm ready to do the work and put the time in. here's my very first oil painting, ever... in the history of the world.

not tooooo bad. it's pretty good if you just look at it really quick. and don't pay much attention to the detail.

So this past week I took a long needed vacation with Sydney. The two of us went to Hawaii. We stayed on the island of Oahu at her parents place. Which is bad ass. And let me just list a couple of perks that come with Hawaii, at no additional charge or fee.

It’s always about 85 outside.

EVERYTHING and everyone is relaxed. From the people, to the radio, to the freeway. (which can get annoying if you’re used to, oh I don’t know, normal freeway speeds)

Food is more delicious

Everything is slightly cheaper, due to a lower tax

And most importantly, you can sleep till 1pm our time (CA), at its only 11 am there. Which is amazing

And so while we were exploring the island (in the ugliest dam rental car ever) I couldn’t help but notice some of the local writers and painters. But I think what stood out to us more was the efforts made to paint over and cover up graffiti. It’s was like a where’s Waldo’s graffiti, but all you saw was mute paint swatches. Every freeway, center divider, over pass, sides of buildings where just covered with blobs of gray paint. And I think I after seeing that I was able to slip into a different perspective. It was almost like a feeling of guilt to see a beautiful place brought down like that. But how could it not? It’s an island. There’s going to be graffiti and they’re going to run out of space. It’s not like San Francisco, where we have this big city, with a ton of graffiti artist, but there not confined to the city. They’ve got north or south. Endless freeways and overpasses. If there were massive walls holding in the city and all the people (in addition to a lot of other crazy shit) we’d see a lot more graffiti, just everywhere.

But either way, I saw some cool work and here are a couple of photos. I'm sure it's not the best the island has to offer, but good stuff either way. I'm a particular fan of Clit.

well well well. who do we have here?

as i was driving through the city i managed to catch a shot of two of favorite bay area writers. pork and phaze. phaze has really developed in style over the last couple of years. i remember the first phaze throwie i saw was off of 92 in San Mateo about two years back. i know he still hits that spot every now and then cause he'll paint over his own piece. it's like he's updating.

and pork is just awesome. i've mostly seen little tags here and there around SF, and one or two etchings. but i've also seen him getting some ups with some larger graffiti like this one. i think what i admire most about pork is the name. hah. but in all seriousness, i love finding writers with cleaver ass names that make you go "dam, that's a good name. why didn't i think of that?!?"

then i also got a shot of this one right off the Vermont street exit. aparently... some one is not to cool with Sick and his buddies. crossed out... that's cold man...

i just remembered that i took this picture back in '07. me and Sydney went down to Chile to visit the various land marks and homes of her (and now mine) favorite poet, Pablo Neruda. we flew into Santiago and spent a day or two there before we jumped on a bus and toured around Chile's coastal towns. but while walking around beautiful Santiago i couldn't help but take pictures of all the awesome graffiti. i have a ton of pictures but for now i'll just post this one.

this wall of stickers and wheat paste caught my eye. the thing i appreciate most about stickers and wheat paste is...you can't mess it up! you make that shit at home! there's no excuse. or as my cousin likes to say "there aint no wack shit!"

so i had some things to take car of in the city today and i was driving through harrison and 17/16th ish. i ALWAYS find some cool stuff around there. and i realized a couple of things.

thing #1. it's really hard to take a photo on your phone and drive at the same time.
thing #2. this project will be totally bitchn' cause san francisco graffiti is something that will never be depleted.

thing #3. there's a s-ton of classic graffiti in san francisco that has survived being demo'd, pinted over, torn down and so on. so i'm going to make an extra effort to take some photos of that.

the first thing i was able to snap a shot of today was this top to bottom box truck fill. i know in the past i've seen that type of tree thing used, but i can't remember if it was this same person. either way. i like.

i know some of these a little tough to see. lousy zoom... and not having it... but here's some heaven hits. sweet spots.

and here's something from downtown san mateo. i was walking back to my car and i had to take a picture of this tag. what a sweet spot. this door was clean, with bad ass lighting and just asking to be hit.

and i have some good news. im charging my camera finally! i can keep it in my car and take actual photos. with zo0om and about 10 more mp.

the new thing

so, here's the thing, i want to blog more, but i have very little to say. or i guess i have a lot to say, but other than my own work i have nothing that's worth reading or writing about. but i have an idea. i've always wanted to somehow document the kick ass street/guerilla art that i see around the city and in my travels. so that's what i'm going to do. there's just so many artists/painter/writers that really inspire and impress the hell out of me with their styles and ideas. and i also like to fantasize and live vicariously through someone else's graffiti life style...

AND SO

to kick start this new thing of mine. i bring you "chan". usually, no matter where you are in the city there's sure to be a chan throwie somewhere. he's got this distinct style of these tall letters. this photo was taken almost a year ago, but i continue to see him all over the place. keep an eye out next time your in the city. no doubt you'll see him popping up somewhere. street signs, roof tops. most of the time i'll see his stuff along side "phaze" of something, but a little throwie like this can be appreciated all on it's own.

cont. Donkey cowboy

So now I’ve fully developed this idea of a donkey cowboy. But now he’s a sheriff. And the coyote is still just a bad guy. I really like how this is coming along, it’s nice to work on something different. And I think that’s the biggest lesson I’ve learned from this. When I was in class listening to all the other ideas for this project I realized, “man, I always do stuff JUST like that, do I always do typical shit like everyone else?!?” and I dooo… it’s always some post-apocalyptic war torn city blah blah. I mean that stuff is really cool, and it IS a really common element in movies and crap. But what i realize that I need to set my self apart. So why not a sheriff donkey and robbing coyote? And let me tell you, NO ONE had anything even close to the same idea.

Any way. This is my new goal. “Don’t do the crap that you always do!”

So... hey blog... what’s up? I...uh... I know it's been a while. Hope we're still cool. We’re cool right?

I’ve been reviewing last semester in my head and saying, man, WHEN will I find time to post all the work I’ve been doing?!? And, I quickly realize that I really don’t have much to show for… which sucks pretty hard. But I do have one or two things I can post. Which will hopefully follow shortly

But on the other hand! This years summer session I feel that I’ve been doing pretty well. I’m taking color and design and below you will find the exploration of my latest assignment. This project was major specific, so since im visual development, which falls into the illustration category, my project is heavily based on some kind of story. And with the help of my beautiful creative girlfriend, and a growing interest in cowboys, we came up with the idea of a donkey cowboy as the main character. And now that I have a character in mind, I need a setting. At this stage I just need roughs, but by tomorrow afternoon I’ll need to finalize the composition. Still working out the kinks of the story… such as what IS the story. Haha. Anyway. Here’s progress for now.

here's a robot idea i've been playing around with. i found some time tonight to get out a rough sketch in photo shop. rendering the metal was pretty easy with a textured brush, but i think next time i'll really push to refine it, and make the metal more convincing. i could of pushed the wheel and mechanism a little more, but at least i laid down my idea.

Here’s my third draft of this character, but I still get the feeling that I should pump out a couple more. Either way, I’m SO much happier with this version. The one major upgrade is the face, now he has one. But now I’m left with other decisions to make.

I’m not committed to this color scheme in any way. But it's growing on me. I think I’m going to try and work out some real thick texture for the vest.

And I’m on the fence with the gun going between the legs. I like it and I don't. I think it's an improvement from just straight up and down, but like I said, I’m back and forth on it.

Also, I’m going to work some more detail into the gun.

Here are some ideas I’m playing with. Simple but I feel like they add a certain quality. I added a shoulder holster and two pouches on his belt. The pouches are place holders really, for when I figure out how he carries bullets for his pistol. And I guess that mostly depends on the time period. Because I automatically assumed he didn't have clips. So I says, a pouch!

And from a silhouette stand point... I don't think the pouch on the left will read well...

this is my first character design and im pretty excited about it. here's some sletches i did, and the refined, inked drawing.

this week we're going to toss them in photoshop and start painting them. very exciting. i still feel like i could have pushed the details a lot more, but i kept telling my self i can do it in photoshop. we'll see what kind of feed back i get.

working out the kinks

so here's this composite i'm working on. luckily im pretty much done, all that's left is the hard part, and that's making all the values work together. i know i need to brightest and darkest in the foreground. muted for the middle ground and really wash it out for the background. but somethings off. can't put my finger on it. maybe i pushed it to much. i usually tend to not push enough.

in addition i feel like it's totally static. mostly cause there's no action. it's really just an environment study. which is ok. i guess you don't always have to go for the glory shots.

clothed figure two: week two

here's round two of this class. i feel like i did pretty good this week. what im most happy about is that i know that i've seen a progression with my work.

in clothed figure 1, i felt like i was stuck in my habits and wasn't learning much, especially towards the end of the semester. but for some reason when i walked into clothed figure 2, i was like, " whoa, who is this?" and suddenly i had jumped that hurtle. but i think it's just an artist phase thing. sometimes you progress every day you practice, and others you just have to keep working through all the crap that you produce.

but anyway, no more crap for now, and i'll try to keep it that way

this last one i'm particularly proud of, even though that hat looks really funny and the light patterns are not what they should be. but after this drawing the instructor took a second to say that he really enjoys my style, and that i'm doing very well.

and he spit in my face the whole time... cause he's from new york.

today was the first day of the semester for me, and to start off the year i had clothed figure 2, with William Sanchez. i've heard a lot about his class and teaching style but it was always a comment like " oh yea, that's just bill for ya" which makes no sense to an ease dropper. but now i get it. first off and more importantly he's a New Yorker, which should make you say "o0o0o0o, i got you." and let me tell you, he's the most typical new yorker ever, actually, if you put the entire cast of Sinfeld into one person, that's who my teacher would be. but i already know im going to love his class and hopefully i'll have a bunch of cool work to put up.

i finished off the day with "portfolio 1," which actually got it's name changed to "career development" last minuet, like today! but either way, it's pretty much a business class, and teaches you how to think more like a business person in regards to your work, and your place in the industry.

and tomorrow's another day.

I decided to give my self a little winter project, so I’m going to make octopus man. I’ve been wanting to get some clay on my hand for a while now but haven’t had the opportunity, this should be a good excuse. I think I’m going to make it about 7 to 8 inches tall, and have wildly awesome tentacles going every direction.

Perhaps I’ll have some other winter side projects come up to…

Here’s the last homework assignment that I had to do. I never realized the importance of a silhouette until this assignment. It really does help composition when you have strong silhouettes because if that reads well, then your image will read well and make for a more dynamic pose. Foundation stuff.

and so... i've vowed to complete (at minimum) 1 sketch book a month... so far so good. these flower sacks are from septembers'. we had this assignment to draw these flower sacks to show volume of forms and stuff. i had fun with it.

im able to upload the other two!

obviously, not as strong as the other two, at least i think so. this profile-type view is ok. im happy with it. but the last one i think i made some bad choices with the face and such.

if i remember correctly my only REAL critique was that i put too much time into the hair. i should try and make it one shape and tone, and limit too much "noise" in the hair? even though i like what i did with the hair, i can understand where that comment was coming from.

also, i should have played up the props more. or so says the instructor. but i understand that also. without those certain story telling elements it's harder to determine who this character is. so...

lesson learned.

here's the first big-ish assignment for clothed figure drawing.

we were supposed to just create some character. no real guide lines other than creating a character. showing him/her in 4 different positions. being sure to show overlaping forms, strech and compression...blah blah blah.

and as you can see...i only have two... there are four but blogger decided not to load the last two...

anyway, i had fun with this assignment.

my character is a former russian weapons engineer, rocket scien-tologist type of character. and now he's hiding from his government in america... fixing vacuums. i got some good laughs when i presented it. which made me happy.

So I think this the second figure I did in class. Obviously a female figure. I was very happy with the results. Actually, so was the model. She even took a picture of it. And I know my instructor liked it also, but I think that was mostly cause of the improvement that I made from the last one. He was an awesome teacher. I think he was polish? Something like that. But he had a very, fuddy duddy attitude towards art, but he was funny as hell. I remember when he saw it his exact words were “…hm…not bad.”

Anyway.

Why so serious?

Caught the 12:10 showing of batman last night, or should I say this morning. And, all I can say is that it was everything I wanted it to be, and much more. Perfect. The acting was amazing, every character was cast beautifully. From Christian Bale, who once again nailed the part of batman, and also is the only batman to make a second movie! All the actors and actresses were incredible. But to me Maggie Gyllenhaal was the weak link. She pulled of the role, and she’s a good actress. But I almost feel like she was “overacting” which came off as “UNDERacting” if that makes sense to any one? Some of the lines were just lacking something, and other had too much. Can’t put my finger on it cause im not really ready to criticize the movie yet…ahaha.

But I will end this with a little something about Heath Ledger. Unbelievable. Amazing, incredible. An exact representation of what the joker should be, and more. His acting, was just…something every actor should strive for. He was twisted… cruel… heartless …insane …funny … crazy… truly a mad man. He WAS the joker. I was so convinced that I feel that he wouldn’t of been the same if he were still with us.

Any way, amazing film, have to watch it again, again and again. I shouldn’t say much more because my thoughts are to scattered right now. Loved it. That’s all.

I think this was my 3 point perspective project for “perspective for animation” class. What I tired to do was create some post-world-war type of make shift colony of survivors. Very vague setting…perhaps…remove the head? Eh? Jake?

Anyway, I was happy with it. After I took this picture I brought up the values just another notch, to add more contrast. I was happy with it. I feel like it’s still lacking some detail. I could of taken it a lot further and pushed it a little more, but I think that’s a pretty good summary of this past semester. No messing around this coming fall.

I wanted to put all of these in order, but by the time I coordinate my self to do that, I’ll have other things to post. So I’ll just give ‘em up as I get ‘em.

This was our second portrait assignment towards the end of April. Which I was hoping would come out better than the first, but life doesn’t always work out that way. A good try I think. Faces in general have always been an issue for me. Also, I think I’ve been taught to ignore the face and focus on expression through the body and proportions and anatomy type junk. And I think I naturally avoid drawing faces anyway…oops.

Any way, the beautiful thing about clay is that you can pull off that rough, choppy, and messy on purpose kind of look. So things like a crooked mouth look intentional.

Photography Taboo

So, the amateur photographer in me says no! But the colors say yes!

I see flower shots as something that’s hard to mess up, but at the same time difficult to pull off. Every picture of a flower I just see as a cheesy, over used, easy, gift card, kind of a shot. It takes some degree of professionalism to take a photo of a flower and express some kind of idea of feeling, and I think it’s obvious when someone takes a photo for artistic purpose, or artistic intentions; which are very different things. Kind of like when some guy throws a rock in the ocean for whatever intentions, and Andy Goldsworthy throws a rock for artistic purpose or discovery. But maybe that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense…

Any way… confession: I took a bunch of cheesy flower shots because I mean, if they’re there, and you have your camera, you really can’t help it. Especially when a model like this one makes it even easier.

Starting with this one back in February, it was the very first assignment in figure modeling class, and my first clay figure in like…4 years.

A note worthy attempt I think. I was pretty proud of it.

My critique, if I remember correctly, was about the ankles getting too thin, and other proportional problems.

so it's day two of this thing, i guess im having trouble keeping my values straight. i need to be a little more clear on whats reflected light and whats cast shawdow, ect. any way, it's only day two.

i'll try and work on getting some quick times videos of my animations up.

so, i don't quite remember why, bu when i posted those three pictures i was in a hurry for some reason...anyway, the one on the left is something out of my analysis of form class. i like doing these kind of progress photos. it's a female torso. obviously. and it's in it's beginning stages. this is supposed to take me about 12 hours to complete( four classes of 3 hours). so hopefully i wont mess it up. i have some proportion changes to make. but...it's going OK.

the other two are take one of wacom tablet learning...but I'll get there, even if it kills me...or some one else. but i do like balloons, i don't know why, but there's just something about them that takes over my imagination.

anyway...

this one is a mallard duck that i stole a shot of when in Hawaii. i later made this bird into a final for watercolor. I'm happy with it for the most part. i feel like the dirt and the feathers were over looked to much. and it just kinda becomes blah. but it's not so bad.

this one i can call my second great watercolor achievement...i guess. this is also from a photo i took while visiting Santa Barbara mission. i kinda got lazy near the end of this one too... bad habits...

a squash study!! from life of course. i just like the shape of pumpkins and squash.
the sense of light is awful in this one.

this one i photographed terribly. but it's actually one of the ones i like the most. i wanted to try and get the different textures of the peppers and lemons, but im happy with what it is. also because i TOTALLY made up the light source and the cast shadow.

they look so much better as tiny pictures.

after many busses

after two buss rides me and sydney arrive in Valparaiso, Chile. the most happen'n place this side of the equator. but really, it was a crazy big city, with a hustle and bustle city life and quiet streets that remind me of little towns in Mexico.

then in the city we found this little park to sit in until hunger took over. ( which had fatal consequences ). i love this bench so much because I've never seen one with the little extension for kids and their undeveloped short legs.

yet more pre-columbian stuff...

this statue is about 8 feet tall, and carved of wood. i had to stop and draw this because it was in such a dark room with only one very strong light source. that and there was like maybe 5 more around this center one which i believe is a women? it was a light study, and a awesome study.
